From city lights to the hills of Catalunya's Llémena Valley, our story is one of hospitality, adventure, and a leap of faith.
We are Robin and Karel, originally from the Netherlands, now living in the heart of the Llémena Valley in Catalunya. For years, Amsterdam was home. A good life, good work, and everything that comes with a city that never quite slows down. But somewhere between the ambition and the busyness, a different kind of life kept pulling at us. One with more space, more nature, and more room to build something truly our own.
The decision came faster than anyone expected, including us. On an impulsive evening, we booked a flight south. The first destination did not feel right. Then we found Girona, and everything changed. The old city, the cycling culture, the landscape just beyond the walls. It was the kind of place that makes you stop mid-sentence and look around. We came for a weekend and left knowing something had shifted.
A few months later, still following that feeling, we discovered a historic watermill estate in Sant Esteve de Llémena. Overgrown hedges, ancient stone, a river running alongside land that had been working and living for centuries. It was wild in the best possible way. We walked the grounds, looked at each other, and did not need long to decide. This was it.
By September, the offer was made. That is where the Vall Amagada story began, and where this chapter of ours truly started.

Crafting a rural boutique hotel in Catalunya
From the beginning, the idea was simple. Not a hotel that impresses from a distance but one that earns its place through the details. A space where every room feels considered, every meal is worth sitting down for, and every guest leaves having found something they did not expect in the Catalan countryside.
We wanted to create a place for people who move through the world with curiosity. Cyclists, hikers, couples, and families looking for somewhere genuinely beautiful, comfortable, and full of character. The kind of hotel we always wanted to stay in but could never quite find.

We met at Hotelschool The Hague over a decade ago and got together after three weeks. Since then, building things together has always been what we do best.
Robin built her career in operations, revenue management, and opening hotels. Karel grew up in his family's hotel on Texel, then moved into motorsport events, earned a master's in Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Grenoble, and founded a luxury mobility startup.
Different paths, a shared vision, and the desire to create the kind of hotel we always wanted to stay in ourselves.
